Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (Kap)

Ketamine Therapy Washington State

What is ketamine?

Serenity Counseling Northwest

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, or KAP for short, is a therapeutic approach that combines ketamine with psychotherapy to support deeper emotional access, insight, and healing.

In my practice, KAP isn't about a quick fix or a recreational experience. It's a carefully held process that uses the medicine as one part of a larger therapeutic journey.

For some, KAP can help loosen the grip of depression, trauma, anxiety, or long-standing patterns that have felt difficult to reach through talk therapy alone. It can also be a meaningful space for those who feel disconnected from themselves, caught between different versions of who they’ve had to be, or unsure how to make sense of a more fragmented inner world.

Some things are hard to reach through words alone.

A deeper way to explore the parts of you asking for change

Ketamine is a legal, safe, and effective anesthetic that has been used in medical settings for decades. In lower doses, it has become an important tool in mental health treatment - working through different brain pathways than traditional antidepressants, improving neuroplasticity, and offering a more immediate shift in mood and perception.

In a therapeutic context, ketamine can create enough distance from old patterns, pain, or disconnection that you are able to relate to yourself with more openness, insight, and possibility - all within a carefully supported process of preparation and integration.

The medicine is one part of a larger journey. The therapy is what makes it meaningful.

Self-rediscovery

Trauma and deeply rooted pain

Grief and loss

Depression and emotional numbness

Major life transitions

Relationship and attachment wounds

Disconnection from self

Identity fragmentation and inner conflict

What can ketamine-assisted psychotherapy help with?

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy may be for you if ...

Talk therapy has helped, but you feel like something is still just out of reach.

You struggle with depression, anxiety, or trauma that has felt resistant to other approaches.

You feel disconnected from yourself. Caught between different versions of who you’ve had to be, or unsure how to make sense of a fragmented inner world.

You are drawn to a more immersive experience of self-exploration and are ready to approach it with intention and care.

You are curious about what might be possible if you could relate to your pain from a little more distance - with more openness and less guardedness than usual.

Trust that the medicine opens the window and the work we do together is what makes it last

Access what's underneath the surface, with support to actually do something about it

Feel less stuck in loops you've been running for years

Relate to your own patterns from a different vantage point, with enough distance to see them clearly

Working together, you'll begin to:

Reach out to plan your first consultation.

This is a chance for us to talk through what brings you in, what you’re hoping to shift, and whether this way of working feels like a good fit.

We’ll discuss your goals, relevant history, and any questions you have, while also giving you a feel for my approach and what it might be like to do this work together.

01. Consultation

Ketamine prescriptions are provided through Journey Clinical, the medical organization I partner with for KAP.

Their team will meet with you via Zoom to review your medical and psychiatric history, provide education on the treatment, and determine your eligibility.

02. Medical evaluation

Once your prescription has been filled, we’ll begin scheduling your preparation, dosing, and integration sessions.

Preparation sessions happen before the dosing session and are structured similarly to regular therapy appointments - a space for us to align on the process, discuss what to expect, and set intentions for the work ahead. Most clients have between one and three preparation sessions depending on their needs.

03. Preparation session(s)

We’ll go over a preparation checklist together. This includes having a blood pressure cuff on hand - you’ll take a reading before the session begins and again once it’s complete - and confirming that a chaperone will be present, if conducting our session remotely.

Your chaperone doesn’t need any clinical background - they’re simply there to be your support on the ground if you need anything during the experience, like a glass of water or an extra blanket. I’ll walk both of you through what to expect beforehand.

04. Before the dosing session

A typical ketamine dosing session lasts between 1.5 and 3 hours and can be held in-person or remotely via telehealth. For the latter, you’ll be in your own home, settled in a comfortable reclining position with an eye mask and music.

The experience is largely inward and reflective. I remain present with you throughout - not to direct the experience, but to help create a sense of safety, steadiness, and support.

05. Dosing session

This is where the real work happens. Following your dosing session, we meet for multiple integration sessions to process what arose - the thoughts, images, memories, and insights that emerged during your experience. The temporary shift in perspective that ketamine creates can make it easier to observe the different parts of yourself with curiosity rather than conflict.

Ideally, your first integration session takes place within 48 hours of your dose, and no later than one week after.

06. Integration

We’ll check in on how things are settling, revisit your goals, and determine together whether additional dosing sessions would be beneficial or whether we transition back into regular therapy work.

07. Folllow up

For those paying entirely out of pocket, bundling your sessions offers a simpler, more affordable way to commit to the full process. Bundle pricing is available for cash pay clients only and cannot be combined with insurance billing.

$300–$600 per dosing session (billed at $200/hour, session length varies)

Frequently asked questions

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) tends to be a good fit for those who feel like something is still just out of reach despite other therapeutic work, or who are dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, or long-standing patterns that have felt difficult to shift. It can also be a meaningful space for those navigating a fragmented sense of self or feeling deeply disconnected from who they are.

That said, KAP isn’t for everyone - eligibility is determined through a medical evaluation process, and we’ll talk through fit during our initial consultation before any next steps are taken.

Yes.The medical evaluation through Journey Clinical screens for contraindications, which include uncontrolled high blood pressure or certain cardiovascular conditions, a history of psychosis or schizophrenia, active mania, certain medications including benzodiazepines and some mood stabilizers, active or recent substance use disorder, and pregnancy.

This list is not exhaustive. Eligibility is determined on a case by case basis during the medical evaluation, and Journey Clinical’s team will walk you through all of this in detail.

Journey Clinical is the medical organization I partner with for KAP. They handle the prescribing side of the process - conducting a medical and psychiatric evaluation via Zoom, determining your eligibility, and providing your ketamine prescription.

I handle the therapeutic side - preparation, the dosing session itself, and integration. We work together to make sure the process is safe, supported, and clinically sound.

Partially. I am in-network with Premera, Aetna and United Healthcare (UHC), which means preparation and integration sessions - billed as standard psychotherapy - may be covered depending on your plan.

Dosing sessions are out of pocket regardless of insurance coverage. The cost of the medical evaluation and prescription through Journey Clinical is also billed separately. I recommend checking with your insurance provider about your specific coverage.

Every dosing session is a little different, and I find it most useful to walk through the specifics together during our consultation so I can tailor the explanation to your situation and answer your questions in real time. That said, here’s a general sense of what to expect:

Dosing sessions can be held in-person or remotely via telehealth and last between 1.5 and 3 hours. For the latter, you’ll be in your own home, in a comfortable reclining position, with an eye mask and music to support an inward experience. You self-administer your ketamine lozenge, and I remain present with you on screen throughout - not to direct the experience, but to hold a sense of steadiness and safety. The experience is largely reflective and internal.

In-person dosing sessions are similar but held in my office. Regardless of where your dosing appointment takes place, you’ll need to rest afterwards for the remainder of the day and should not drive. Please arrange for a friend to drive you or book an uber if you need to travel following your session.

If you have specific questions about what to expect, the consultation is the best place to go deeper.

Not necessarily - some clients come specifically for KAP. That said, KAP works best as part of a broader therapeutic relationship, and the preparation and integration sessions are a meaningful part of the process regardless.

We’ll talk through your history and goals during the consultation to figure out what makes the most sense for you.
